Business continuity management software shortlists usually come down to a question vendors rarely ask directly: is this platform built to author plans, or to be invoked when systems are down? Every product will hold a BIA and a plan document. Far fewer are usable at 03:00 during an incident, and fewer still produce the activation evidence a regulator asks for afterwards.

Ask for a demonstration of an activation, not a plan build. Can a recovery lead open this on a phone, during an outage, and know their first ten minutes? Is there a timestamped activation log capturing every invocation, decision and escalation? ISO 22301 clause 8.5 requires evidence of exercising and testing; without an activation record you can show the plan existed but not that it worked.
ISO 22301 clause 8.4.4 specifies what a continuity plan must contain: roles and responsibilities, activation procedures, and the actual continuity and recovery steps. A platform whose plan object mirrors that structure produces audit-ready output by default. A platform that stores an uploaded document leaves you to prove conformance manually.
Some BCM tools are modules on a larger platform. That is a genuine advantage when the platform already holds your CMDB and dependency data — and a genuine risk if the systems being recovered are the ones the BCM tool depends on. Ask explicitly what happens to plan access during an outage of the host platform.
For SAMA-regulated entities, the expectation is a documented programme with tested recovery, defined RTOs for critical services, and evidence that exercises produce corrective action. Global platforms cover ISO 22301 well; SAMA-specific reporting is usually something you construct.
Established enterprise platform for operational resilience and continuity, with a strong reputation for dependency mapping — modelling how processes, systems, suppliers and sites interconnect. Best fit for large, complex organisations where understanding dependency chains is the hard problem.
A BCM application on the ServiceNow platform. The compelling argument is inheritance: if your CMDB, incident management and service catalogue already live in ServiceNow, dependency data is present rather than re-entered. The counter-argument is concentration — evaluate carefully how plans are reached if the platform itself is affected.
